Recently a friend mentioned he was going to set up a Twitter account for his business and link it to his Facebook business page. My initial response – “No, you aren’t.” He mentioned he had just heard about all these apps and programs that make it super easy to link Facebook and Twitter. My response: “Just because you CAN do something doesn’t mean you SHOULD do it.” Here are my reasons why I feel it is a bad idea to link a Twitter account to Facebook:
- If your Twitter account only links to your Facebook page and I “like” your Facebook page, what is the benefit for me to follow you on Twitter? I follow companies (and people) on Facebook and Twitter because of the information they provide. Give people a reason to “like” your Facebook page AND follow your Twitter account.
- Twitter is truly about engagement – don’t just talk AT your customers, clients, etc., talk TO them. And don’t just talk about yourself. Talk about your city, your life, your likes. Be authentic and be real.
- Don’t think that Twitter is something you can set-up and forget. Twitter involves a time commitment. In as little as 10 minutes a day you can communicate with others, share tweets you found helpful, AND promote your business. Just make sure you are doing all three of those items.
